Dec 2007 - New course in Polytechnic on wireless protocols and their implementation

A new course on wireless protocols and their implementation will be offered in Spring 2007 in the ECE Department of Polytechnic University. The name of the course is EL 9343: Wireless Network Protocols: A lab-based Approach and it will be taught by Prof. Thanasis Korakis. The cource is very much related to the activities of Witest Lab.

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental design issues of wireless networks. The course is based on the study of wireless protocols using an open source drivers platform. Through building protocols in a real platform, students will be able to understand the challenges in the design of wireless systems, the approaches that have been used today, as well as the open research issues in the field. The main goal of the course is for the students to get “hands-on” experience in the field of wireless networks, while in parallel, it will give the adequate theoretical background as well.

Sept 2007 - MadWifi community announces the initiation of ath5k

From the MadWifi site:

MadWifi has been declared legacy, in response to our commitment to ath5k. In the long run ath5k will replace MadWifi. For the time being MadWifi will still be supported, bugs will get fixed and HAL updates will be applied where possible. But it becomes unlikely that we'll see new features or go through major changes on that codebase.

The driver is mature and stable, though, and works well for most users. For now you should choose MadWifi if you depend on solid WLAN support. But we also encourage all interested users to give ath5k a try.
